Here’s Dylan’s story:

“Walking through the doors that never close, an unemphatic salutation passes by. Robots troll the isles while Televisions all play the same uninspired drivel. Squeals come from children who should be safe and warm in their beds. There are so many items, but what to buy? A brand new HDTV for four hundred dollars? No, I’ll pass. The cameras follow me, I know it. I duck behind of a row mess. Ah, the fish those made me happy once. They swim in unfiltered water, except for one that lies dormant a prisoner of suction. An adolescent flies by me on a 2 wheeled skate board. I close my eyes and still see gray. “Attention Wal-Mart shoppers, we will never close.” What am I here for again?”

“Wal Mart is the world’s biggest retailer, but it doesn’t make a single thing. All it ‘makes’ is a hyper-efficient supply chain.” Tom Friedman, The World is Flat, p.152. We can’t escape it, but I’m not complaining. There’s no where else to go in the small town where I live, and I’m a poor college student. “Wal-Mart’s discounting on food alone boosts the welfare of American shoppers by at least $50 billion a year,” (Friedman, 251). Damn straight.
