Tyler Jacobson is a co-founder of and resident DJ at the world-famous Lipgloss indie dance party. Here’s his story:
“Around 2004-05, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, The Killers (yuck), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Hot Heat, Kaiser Chiefs… they all hit it big. It was a good time to be a rock DJ.
Now, music with guitars is boring or useless pop. I don’t want to be a beat DJ but I need a resurgence of exciting music. Can the singer/songwriters of the world put their acoustic guitars down and find killer rhythm sections… Please?!”

Yeah, everyone’s gotten folky. It’s either exotic folkey (Arcade Fire, Devotchka) or sweeping orchestral music lately. Which is fun for wine parties. Not so much for dance parties.
Y’know, I hear that at most Roger, Roll shows, you won’t even SEE an acoustic guitar, and that one guy, Patrick, is like a die-hard electric guitar enthusiast and they have songs you can dance to and–
I mean, y’know, these are just things I hear. From around. Who knows.
Hey, I like that folky stuff. Rock on my acoustic friends, rock on.
